After hearing their stories I was inspired to bring games into my anthropology teaching too. I developed a 1-credit experimental course on Anthropology of through Games which was offered in Fall 2014 through Commonwealth Honors College. In my course we used tabletop card and computer games to explore themes in social behavioral and By Krista Harper with Sam Anderson. In my last blog post I described my recent course on Anthropology of through Games. Students in the class played analyzed and designed games related to anthropological concepts and they also used ethnographic techniques such as participant observation and interviews to understand participants experiences of games. Teaching anthropological theory especially the history of anthropological theory can present certain challenges. Students often approach the subject circumspectly questioning why they need to learn about it and fearing that they are going to find it confusing or incomprehensible. This short two-part blog post is a set of reflections on the value of teaching with sequential art the result of a course I recently taught entitled Anthropology and the Graphic Novel. In part I taught the course in order to develop a better understanding of the medium for a collaborative graphic ethnography that I am working on.
