Conclusions We found support for the negative effects of intensive agriculture forestry increases in generalist predator populations and climate warming on Curlew abundance and population change. We found that predators and generalist prey benefitted from lower temporal variance of basal resources which increased both of their landscape-scale abundances. However increasing the amount of basal resources also increased the variability of generalist prey populations resulting in a negative correlation between basal resource amount and Because a generalist predator is able to adapt its diet and exploit different prey types the dynamics of generalist predators are not necessarily tightly coupled to those of any one of their prey and it is likely that the numerical response of predator populations will like the functional response be driven by the availability of more than Estimates of predation on field voles by red foxes and tawny owls at high vole density were above the value predicted for this site and for the whole generalist predator community by a published model assuming that predation by generalist predators stabilizes vole populations. Our results show that numerical functional and total responses of pygmy owls and probably also other vertebrate predators to the availability of the main prey in winter are shaped by the age and sex composition of the predator population which both show large spatio-temporal variation in boreal forests.
