Lung cancer often spreads to the lymph nodes before spreading to other regions of the body. What lymph nodes are involved and where these are in relation to the primary cancer are important questions to ask when determining the stage of the cancer. After someone is diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer NSCLC doctors will try to figure out if it has spread and if so how far. This process is called staging. The stage of a cancer describes how much cancer is in the body. It helps determine how serious the cancer is and how best to treat it. Cancer has also spread to the lymph nodes on the opposite side of the windpipe or lung or to lymph nodes in the lower part of the neck.
