Children as young as six feel fear rage and despair as a result of mathematics anxiety a condition which can cause physical symptoms and behaviour problems in class according to a study. This study developed and validated a Mathematics Anxiety Scale for Students MASS that can be used to measure the level of mathematics anxiety that students experience in school settings and help This study will provide an in-depth understanding of the emotional roots of MA in primary and secondary school children. The researchers will also characterize the relation of MA and general anxiety and links to mathematics performance and develop robust MA questionnaires. Many students suffer from school related anxiety. Contemporary research is supportive of the negative effects of anxiety and stress on academic performance in students of all ages. Anxiety can also negatively affect classroom behavior. Not all data are in support of the negative effects of anxiety. Either way it isn t helping and now new research from the University of Cambridge has found that studying maths is causing some primary school pupils to feel rage and despair as a result of Sometimes school anxiety is easy to identify like when a child is feeling nervous before a test at school. Other times anxiety in the classroom can look like something else entirely an upset stomach disruptive or angry behavior ADHD or even a learning disorder. That is maths anxiety might cause decreased performance and poorer performance might elicit maths anxiety as summarised below. We believe that a model like this one is best able to account for the mixture of data which suggests that the relationship between maths anxiety and maths performance operates in both directions. This paper examines the relationships among these three constructs school context student attitudes and behavior and achievement using longitudinal data from a large-scale high school reform effort. The analysis is exploratory in nature in that it tests one particular hy-pothesis about the relationships among these constructs.
