Teaching grammar to those with Dyslexia should include a structured systematic and sequential approach similar to the approach we use to teach them the logical connections between the sounds and symbols in the English language. A teacher should teach grammar using the same format to teach the Orton Gillingham Basic Language curriculum. Teaching one part of speech at a time beginning with nouns while applying the same structured sequential and cumulative nature of the Orton Gillingham Approach will allow students to master the various grammatical concepts. The Orton Gillingham teaching philosophy is the go-to remedial tool for those with Dyslexia and works beautifully for anyone learning the English language. Sadly there are many misconceptions about the Orton Gillingham Approach. It is my hope that this article clears up some of those misconceptions Teaching Grammar to Those with Dyslexia Trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach she spent eight years at the Schenck School in Atlanta which provided her with a firm foundation in teaching students with Dyslexia and other struggling readers. Her goal has always been to provide high-quality explicit instruction to close the gaps for students who are having reading difficulties. Dyslexia is one of these learning problems and the Orton-Gillingham approach is one of the solutions offered to help. Dyslexia It is a neurological condition with some genetic components that has nothing to do with the lack of good teaching it s a language-based learning disability that doesn t affect intelligence or perceptual senses The term MSLE was adopted by the International Dyslexia Association as a generic de signation of the shared characteristics of well-known Orton Gillingham based approaches to teaching reading and language skills. MSLE certification is also available through the Academy of Orton Gillingham thus the accreditation is almost one and the same. Teaching kids with dyslexia to read at home has never been easier thanks to the development of more and more user-friendly Orton-Gilligham programs. The programs in this comparison of the top 4 Orton-Gillingham reading programs were chosen because they are affordable and designed to be used by parents at home. Orton Gillingham is a well-regarded approach to teaching kids who struggle with reading. That s why many teachers use Orton Gillingham-type strategies in their reading instruction. Having students walk around the floor in the pattern of a letter for instance is an activity inspired by Orton Gillingham. Teaching grammar to those with Dyslexia should include a structured systematic sequential approach similar to the approach we use to teach them the logical connections between the sounds and symbols in the English language.
