It is easy to take seating for granted or only see the partial benefits it provides but proper seating can be a useful tool to accomplish class objectives. There are three styles that are commonly used in the classroom traditional rows U-shaped and cluster groups pairs . Arranging desks in a wide horseshoe shape or angular u-shape facing the teacher and whiteboard facilitates whole group discussions while still forcing students to face forward for teacher-directed instruction. It might be a tight squeeze to fit all of your students desks into a horseshoe shape but try forming more than one row or tightening The semi-circle or u-shape arrangement eliminates the biggest challenge of cluster seating teaching to your students backs. You ll still have the ability to move freely about the classroom and experience less side talking but the group dynamic may be lost especially in classes with a lot of students. For some educators the most common classroom seating arrangements aren t the most effective. There are infinite amounts of variations of clusters horseshoes and rows and even more classroom setups that are completely new and different. Here is just a handful of examples of more alternative approaches. A U-Shaped desk arrangement encourages discussion and makes it easy for the teacher to observe students and provide one on one help.
