Expository teaching is a lecture presentation or telling strategy used during instruction. The teacher is in control of presenting the subject matter and directs the students through the lesson. A rule is presented with an example and then practice is provided. Once students begin writing expository essays they will be amazed at how much they can write about. Expository texts also naturally lead into research. For example an essay on learning the sport of curling will require digging around for background information. Push-In Services Pull-Out Services What they are. Specialists work closely with students in the general education classroom. Instructional support differentiated instruction or related services are provided in the classroom.. Specialists work closely with students outside of the general education classroom. With this approach the general education teacher and the special education teacher work together in close collaboration. The focus is to ensure students are receiving full access to the general education curriculum while limiting any disruption to their daily schedule such as pulling students out of a classroom . I do not believe that the push-in model in itself is enough for most students in special education. Having in-class support can help to remedy course content issues especially in the upper years but without the pull-out support and a time to really focus on individualised needs the gaps in a student s learning still remain. Pulling out students for additional services may disrupt classes and embarrass them. If not executed properly the pull-out method may make special education students feel singled out stereotyped or different from their peers. Hill states that the negative stigma associated with pull-out students is more common in the upper grades. During pull-out instruction ELs miss instruction that takes place in the general education classroom. Some ESL teachers pull out mixed-level proficiency groups while others pull out by proficiency level i.e newcomers beginners intermediate or advanced students . The simple definition of a special education pull-out program is a program that takes a student out of the regular classroom during the typical school day and places them in alternative programming according to the National Association for Gifted Children. This blog entry compares the value of push in and pull out interventions to improve student reading. Although there is little research on push in interventions it may be possible to do them well. However there is substantial evidence showing the efficacy of pull out interventions. Do you ever feel like you should be doing more push-in services Push-in services and co-teaching seem to be the rage these days. Many of us are getting pressured to get in to classrooms rather than pulling kids out which means leaves us scrambling to figure out how to make it work. Some of this I went looking for research on push-in interventions. There is of course a lot of research data showing that various pull out interventions have worked at improving reading achievement. However I could find only one study on push in interventions and it was carried out 15 years ago. Research on Push-In Versus Pull-Out.
