Sharing Wordless Picture Books By Reading Rockets Sharing wordless books is a terrific way to build important literacy skills including listening skills vocabulary comprehension and an increased awareness of how stories are structured. I love using the books The Red Book and Unspoken to teach this skill Both are beautifully written wordless picture books Here are a few activities you can do with either book to help teach the reading strategy of asking and answering questions Give each student a blank piece of paper with a large T-Chart drawn on it. Following Katie s lead I have been sharing more wordless picture books with primary students in the library to begin conversations about picture reading. I have started to love wordless picture books and have been adding several wordless books to my collection. Strategies for Teaching with Wordless Picture Books Sharing wordless books is a terrific way to build important literacy skills including listening skills vocabulary comprehension and an increased awareness of how stories are structured. And children love them they can really pore over the pictures and create their own story in their own words. Wordless books can also be used in ELL classrooms and with struggling readers. Teaching with wordless picture books will deeply benefit those students whom are not yet independent readers. A student working at this level can still read the book even though their reading vocabulary is still developing. There are four main ways that wordless picture books improve my teaching practice. Inference is a reading skill that helps students comprehend texts and explore them more deeply. Wordless picture books don t explicitly explain what is happening so students need to pay close attention to the illustrations. One of the hardest strategies I teach my fourth grade readers is making inferences. Of course I begin by modeling with a picture book. I read aloud I stop and think out loud and show how I use my background knowledge and fill in the gaps to understand. We discuss our understandings based on information Now it was starting to make sense. In her mind reading a wordless book meant some serious thinking must be involved. After all there was no text to relay a message or in essence tell the story. This three-minute exchange with my daughter got me thinking about the power of wordless picture books. Reading comprehension can be a touch skill to teach but with picture books things come alive Teaching with picture books has been one of my favorite things about firs grade I love to pull out a great book read it for pleasure then get back into the juicy stuff I need to actually teach with my kids. There are many ways of using wordless picture books with your child and each method will help to develop different literacy skills. You can read more about these methods below.
